The level of utilization of land for residential areas is increasing, along with the high number of births and deaths and migration. This research aimed to analyze (1) the extent of the areas which had undergone the land use changes, and (2) the factors affecting the land use changes in the boundary areas of Makassar-Maros using remote sensing during the period of 20 years. The study design is a combined analysis between qualitative and quantitative methods. Primary data used were obtained by downloading the maps of Landsat 5 TM, 7 ETM+, and 8 OLI images in the boundary areas of Makassar-Maros, the geometric correction, the image cropping and the interpretation. Secondary data used were obtained from direct interviews with local communities conducted systematically and based on the aims of the research. The spatial data were analyzed using overlay process (union) while the non-spatial data were analyzed using statistical analysis with binary logistic regression analysis in SPSS program. The research results indicated that 98.07 ha were the areas of cultivation of food crop land, 62.51 ha were the areas of cultivation of the dry land, and 1.98 ha of the pond cultivation had been changed into the illegal settlement areas without following the policy directives of the space pattern of the government of either Makassar or Maros. It was concluded that the result of the binary logistic regression analysis indicated which affected significantly the land use changes were the population density, elevation, spatial planning policies and the type of soil. Expected improvement of development policy for the evaluation of the Spatial Plan in boundary areas of Makassar-Maros for next year.
